Facelifts and BOTOX® injections used to be the only ways to smooth wrinkles and fine lines, but dermal fillers have risen in popularity. With a few simple and non-invasive injections, wrinkles and fine lines disappear almost immediately. Sculptra® is just one of many dermal fillers on the market, but how is it different from all of its competitors?
The Difference in Sculptra®
Sculptra® is different because of how it works. A lot of dermal fillers only need one injection, but Sculptra® works gradually over a series of three treatments. The competition simply fills in wrinkles without actually getting to the root cause of them. Sculptra® works to target the causes of facial aging. While results aren’t typically noticeable right away, they can remain for over two years on average.
Sculptra®’s results start deep in the dermis where the structure of the skin begins. This is where collagen begins to disappear, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. Sculptra® is made with poly-L-lactic acid, a natural collagen stimulant. This replaces lost collagen to gradually fill in the lines and wrinkles. While the process takes time and doesn’t produce results as quickly as other fillers, it creates a difference that lasts much longer because it naturally corrects facial wrinkles.
Where Can Sculptra® Be Injected?
Sculptra® is effective in treating wrinkles in the nasolabial folds (smile lines), lines surrounding the mouth (marionette lines), and chin wrinkles.
The Sculptra® Treatment Process
Patients can have their treatments done in less than an hour, making this ideal for busy patients who can only squeeze their treatment in on lunch breaks. How many injections occur during each treatment depends on how many areas are being treated.
When the injections are completed, minor swelling and redness can be expected. To minimize these reactions, applying a cloth-wrapped ice pack for the first 24 hours after the injections may help.
Sculptra® Side Effects
The most common Sculptra® side effects are discomfort at the injection sites and bruising.
Who Shouldn’t Have Sculptra®?
People with active skin infections, skin inflammation, or a history of keloid formations should find other options.

Sculptra® is different from its competitors because it targets collagen loss, stimulating new collagen growth to fill in wrinkles and lines over time. While results aren’t immediately apparent, they last.
