Micro-needling is a specialized skin treatment that induces skin cell production. This is accomplished through the creation of small micro-channels. The body responds by sending nutrients to the affected area. The instruments used in skin needling procedures are designed to create small wounds that are separated by healthy tissue. The body uses this healthy tissue as a blueprint for forming newer, healthier skin cells.
The Rejuvapen™ is one of the most popular micro-needling instruments. This type of treatment is known as collagen induction therapy because the body actually creates more collagen while the new skin cells are forming.
About Micro-Needling
Most instruments used have a multitude of sharp needles attached to a roller or a pen-style wand. The depth to which the tiny needles penetrate can be controlled by a dial or an electric motor. This is important because skin thickness varies from one individual to another and in different areas of the body surface.
The tiny needles penetrate several millimeters until they reach the surface of the supporting tissue. The micro-channels fill with scar tissue, lymphatic fluid and blood platelets. This is the recipe for new skin creation.
The resulting tissue that forms in the channels is actually healthier than the unaffected skin cells. This is why micro-needling is usually a multi-step process, with several treatment sessions scheduled over a period of one or two months.
The Rejuvapen™
This special instrument has a beveled tip that prevents suction and clogging. It also has an HEPA filter that blocks airborne blood pathogens. On the far end of the wand is a four-speed control dial that the specialist uses to customize the treatment.
Before we use the Rejuvapen™ for skin treatment, we consult with the client and examine the areas where damaged skin is noticeable. We look at the severity of the wrinkling, the depth of any injury scars and the brittleness of the skin surface.
During the treatment, the pen is placed directly on the skin surface. The wand is moved slightly and the process repeated. A typical treatment session that creates channels over an area of several square inches takes about 30 minutes.
After Treatment
The micro-channels are so tiny that scars will not develop. We usually wait for a week or more before performing the second treatment. This allows us to look closely at the healing pace.
For several months following the last Rejuvapen™ treatment session, the body continues to produce collagen in an increased amount. The full effect of the Rejuvapen™ treatment takes up to four or five months, and the results can last for more than one year.
