Otoplasty is a surgical procedure for repositioning prominent ears into a more aesthetically normal position. During childhood and adolescence, having ears that protrude can have a severe negative impact on psychosocial development due to teasing. Naturally, this can also lead to academic difficulties, depression and behavioral problems. Otoplasty can be performed on children as young as four, and many experts recommend having the surgery done before children start school to avoid any unnecessary psychological trauma.
Pairs of ears are not completely symmetrical, even after the surgery. Slightly differing ears are natural, whereas ones that match perfectly are not. However, Dr. Thomas Funcik will take great care to ensure that both ears are aesthetically appropriate in their size, shape and position. In rare instances, a second surgery may need to be performed to achieve the desired results.
Often, Dr. Funcik will set the ears back toward the head to a degree that may seem excessive at first. However, this is done because the modified ears tend to “spring” away from the head in the months after the procedure. Known as “overcorrection”, this is meant to produce optimal positioning in the following months.
The Surgery
Depending on the patient’s age and individual needs, the procedure may be done under local or general anesthesia and can be performed in our AAAHC accredited private operating suite. In most cases, the patient can go home the same day. The length of the procedure can vary greatly, but it usually takes an hour per ear on average.
To perform the surgery, an incision is made at the back of each ear, exposing the underlying cartilage. Doctor Funcik then modifies this cartilage to place the ears in a more natural position. Sutures are made in the cartilage to maintain this placement, and more sutures are used to close the incisions.
After Care
Following the procedure, Dr. Funcik will bandage the ears to the head, and these will remain in place for roughly three days. After they are removed, the patient will be advised to wear a special elastic headband to protect the ears during sleep. This must be used for between three and four weeks. Some soreness is to be expected after otoplasty, but this typically only lasts for the first two days and can be relieved with pain medication. Some minor bleeding or discharge from the incision sites may also occur.
