Blepharoplasty is a specialized surgical procedure to correct drooping eyelids. The treatment may be performed on the upper lid, lower lid or both. Most commonly performed on men and women in their mature adult years, this procedure is often chosen because it involves the removal of excess tissue that has built up. Eyelid droopiness in mature and middle-aged adults is caused by the depositing of fat tissue below the eyelid skin.
As we age, our skin also becomes more brittle, holds less moisture and is more easily pulled down by gravity. If you are concerned that your drooping eyelids are detracting from your appearance, blepharoplasty may be the solution you’ve been looking for.
How Blepharoplasty Works
If the upper eyelid is to be treated, we will first examine the eye closely and note where the natural folds exist. In this way, we can design a customized surgical procedure that will give you the desired results.
Excess fatty tissue is removed. If necessary, the surgeon will also remove or reposition a small amount of muscle tissue. The excess skin is also removed. The lower lid is treated in much the same fashion. If both eyelids are treated, the procedure may take about three hours.
After the Surgery
Our patients will need to follow a care regimen for a few days following the procedure. We may prescribe an ointment to use as an antiseptic. A follow-up visit will be necessary so that we can make sure that the eye is healing on schedule. The full effect of blepharoplasty, including the lifting and firming of the skin, takes about a month.
Some Things to Remember
Traditional blepharoplasty corrects droopiness in the eyelids, but it is not a treatment for dark eye circles, wrinkles that form around the eye perimeter or for sagging eyebrows. However, Dr. Funcik’s unique approach to blepharoplasty addresses all aspects of aging. A brow lift can also be performed in combination with blepharoplasty.
Blepharoplasty may yield near-permanent results, but some individuals may choose to have the surgery repeated several years later. When we consult with our patients, we offer our best estimate as to how pronounced the results will be, and we will show the patient before-and-after pictures of individuals who have the same basic eye and eyelid shape.
