For an attractive, youthful lip, several traits are common. First, the horizontal line formed where the upper and lower lips meet is a relatively straight line, with little or no down-turning on the ends. Down-turning creates a sad or grouchy appearance. Second, the height of the upper lip (from the lip line to the bottom of the nose) is approximately only one half of the height of the chin (from the lip line to the bottom of the chin.) Departures from these traits can be congenital and are commonly found with the aging process. Injectables can restore lip volume, but do NOT correct these other important signs of aging. Unfortunately, it is common these days to see people whose lip volume has been over corrected but who lack these other desirable traits. At Dr. Funcik's facial plastic surgery center, we tailor the procedure to the individual patient, leaving you with arguably the best lip lift Charleston, SC has to offer.
Lip lifts have been taking the plastic surgery industry by storm in the last couple of years. This procedure can benefit both younger and older patients alike, and has very pleasing results. The standard lip lift has been done on older patients for years—frequently at the same time as a facelift. In recent years, plastic surgeons have modified this procedure to make it a very appealing stand-alone choice for younger patients.
At Thomas Funcik, MD Facial Plastic Surgery, patients will receive incredible skill and professionalism from Dr. Funcik. His Charleston lip lift will leave you with the lips and look you want.
How is a Charleston Lip Lift Done?
The sub-nasal lip lift procedure is a same-day surgery, usually performed under local anesthesia in less than an hour.
Dr. Funcik will gently remove a bullhorn-shaped strip of skin that is right beneath your nose, causing your lips to appear more lifted. Doing this shortens the space between the bottom of the nose and the top of the lips, and increases the show of the pink lip resulting in a more enhanced look for the lips and more pronounced curves. In an attractive smile, the upper teeth show. This can be lost with age or be a congenital trait.
Because the incision is made directly at the base of the nostrils, there’s eventually little to no visibility of the scar.
Results are customizable to the patient’s specific goals. Dr. Funcik can “boost peaks” or minimize lip asymmetries. During your lip lift consultation, be sure to express any questions or concerns to Dr. Funcik, as well as the aesthetic you’re looking for.
Oral Commissure
The oral commissuroplasty lip lift is indicated if only the corners of the lip droop in a frown. In this procedure, a small incision is made at the outer corner of each upper lip line in order to reduce a permanent frown. Patients with this condition will often have marionette lines, aka infracommissural folds. These stubborn lines are NOT corrected by a lip lift but require injections or other procedures to improve.
Oral Commissure is an easy, simple procedure that can truly restore one’s pleasant countenance. In a youthful, pleasant face, the line between the upper and lower lips is a rather remarkably straight line. With aging, the corners of the mouth turn downward, creating a sad, angry appearance. In a twenty minute procedure under local anesthesia (less sticks than a Botox® injection), three or four sutures at the corner of the mouth, our oral commissure, can correct this.
It is a very powerful technique which when combined with Botox® and filler for frown lines can get people to stop asking you if “everything is OK?” While EVERY incision leaves a scar, this scar tends to heal most inconspicuously especially in those with preexisting wrinkles. Occasionally an injection with Restylane is required to minimize a small indentation.
Who Gets a Lip Lift?
A lip lift is an ideal option for those who want a longer lasting solution to their lips than fillers can offer. Because it’s a surgery and not an injectable that will need to be added again in a few months, many patients prefer it.
Some younger patients choose a lip lift instead of fillers to avoid looking “plastic”. Of course, with a trained and experienced injector, fillers look natural and beautiful—however, many patients still want to work with the shape and structure of their own lips. It’s simply a preference for some.
If you’re having a hard time choosing between fillers and a lip lift, Dr. Funcik can help you determine which treatment will be best for you.

What is Lip Lift Recovery Like?
After your lip lift treatment, you may experience some swelling in the lip area. This should subside within 1-2 weeks, and any tightness should go away within a few months. You may experience a slight pulling sensation, no real pain.
Most patients don't need prescription pain medication, perhaps just ice and Tylenol. After about one week, Dr. Funcik will remove your stitches, and any redness can be covered up with concealer.
